Having a new baby is stressful, as parents we worry alot, checking for movement of the infant every few minuets we sit there and monitor the rise and fall of there chests, we live with the constant fear of SIDS. First impressions are good, sound quality is good and reading through the manual this thing seems very sensitive. The proof in the pudding is in the eating as they say so we will see if it does what it says on the box. the alarm is loud which is a good thing and the display has a pendulum icon that moves on the receiver screen this is to let you know that it's detecting movement / breathing.

The Breathing Monitor how did it perform This was the first night I could fall asleep without having to ether listen for breathing or get out of bed to place my hand on my Son's chest. The AC401 states quite clearly that it's not a medical device and is not a prevention for sudden infant death syndrome, but having it there sure makes me feel a lot better. when you remove the baby from the cod (the sensor pad is placed under the mattress underneath where your baby sleeps) first you get 2 beeps to let you know no movement and then after twenty seconds the alarm goes off. we have had the monitor for three days now and there has been no false alarms so far.

When my son is in the cot the pendulum on the screen of the monitor unit swings and makes a beep every few seconds (the beep can be switched off) I have tried removing him and walking around the cot heavy footedly the monitor shows no movement so there are no vibrations causing to show movement when there is none. Before you use this monitor for the first time double check that there are no vibrations affecting the sensor before you use it with your baby.

My son was born at 29 weeks 4 days. It was random, unexpected, and traumatic. If you're lucky to be in a NICU that routinely offers this, then you're golden. But I think a lot of us will find ourselves in NICUs that promote kangaroo care, but maybe get so busy and overworked that it may fall off their radar depending on the nurse.

Kangaroo care, also known as "skin-to-skin" is where you place your naked baby on your bare chest, usually tucked into your shirt. Your body heat helps regulate your preemie's temperature outside of the isolette.

In South America, where they didn't have the technology to properly care for premature infants, they resorted to having the mothers hold their babies in this manner and saw positive effects on the babies.
Think about it: a premature baby belongs with his/her mother. They're supposed to be tucked inside of you swimming in warm fluids, protected deep in your womb. Suddenly, for whatever circumstance, they are ejected into the cold, loud, harsh world, and some of these babies will never regain the warmth and protection they felt inside of their mommies.

These are the benefits of kangaroo care/ skin-to-skin care:

- helps regulate baby's body temperature
- stabilize baby's heart rate
- improved oxygen saturation levels and breathing patterns
- helps breastfeeding efforts
- baby sleeps really well on mommy (and therefore grows, since they grow while they are sleeping)
- baby stays calm and doesn't cry as much with mommy. This helps them preserve their energy and prevent burning calories, meaning more rapid weight gain
- can help the baby get discharged sooner

Kangaroo care is also great for the mom. Speaking from personal experience, it is the best therapy for you when you are feeling overwhelmed, sad, mad, hurt, lonely, empty and the other range of emotions when you have a premature baby.

It also was great for my milk supply. After holding your baby, you should immediately pump. You will see an increase in milk.

Finally, kangaroo care makes you feel like you can do something for your baby. The NICU experience can make you feel totally helpless. This is something you can do to contribute to the care of your baby, and also something that will really make you feel like a mom even when you go home to an empty house with no baby.

My story: my son was born at 29 weeks 4 days. As soon as I was able to start holding him (about three days later), we began doing kangaroo care. I found that some nurses immediately offered it, while other nurses didn't. Usually a nurse didn't offer it because she was too busy. Kangaroo care was not only good for my baby, but it helped me maintain my sanity. It was something to look forward to and a contribution I could make to my helpless son.
